In the Middle Ages, faith was something you could see from across a field. It flew on banners, shone from stained glass and was carved over chapel doorways, and among the most beloved of those signs was IHC: iota, eta and sigma, the opening letters of Jesus in Greek. To followers of Christ it was a standard to gather under, a crest worn with quiet pride.
This IHC Christogram sets those letters in flowing medieval script within a circle, the symbol of eternity. Around it opens a quatrefoil, the four-lobed tracery of Gothic rose windows, often read as the four Gospels carrying the Word to the four corners of the earth. A fleur-de-lis, a time-honored emblem of the Trinity, crowns each lobe, all sculpted in 14K yellow gold with open fretwork that lets the light pass through.
Wear it alone or beside the IHS Christogram for a pair of ancient monograms. It is a heartfelt gift for confirmation, baptism, first communion, ordination or Easter, a cherished keepsake for her, and a timeless gold cross necklace for a mother, godmother or grandmother.
Size: approx. 1.1 in tall and 1.1 in wide, not including the jump ring. Comes on an 18-inch 14K yellow gold chain.
The story card reads:
Christogram
Monogram of Christ and Crest of Christians
A Christogram is an ancient symbol that uses a combination of letters to form an abbreviation or Monogram of Jesus Christ. These symbols are found in ancient artwork, architecture and furniture. Ancient Christians used these Christograms as a Crest or symbol for believers.
IHC – denoting the first three letters of the Greek name of Jesus, iota – eta – sigma, or IHΣ. The Greek letter iota is represented by I, the eta by H, and the Greek letter sigma is represented by C. This was a common crest in Medieval times, a banner for followers of Christ.
