In the golden age of Constantinople, empresses wore crosses like this one over silk and brocade, and the craftsmen of Byzantium favored the balanced Greek form, its four arms of equal length reaching out like an embrace. Pearls, prized above almost every gem, hung from imperial crowns and earrings in shimmering rows. Ancient writers called the pearl a tear of heaven, and in Scripture it is the pearl of great price, worth everything to the one who finds it.
This Byzantine Cross brings that court elegance down to a delicate size. Each arm flares into a soft point tipped with a tiny bead, the corners are laced with open scrolls, and a fine line traces the inner cross. Below it, one natural freshwater pearl dangles from a small gold loop, catching light as you move.
