IHS Christogram Necklace in 14K Yellow Gold

The sacred monogram of Jesus, sculpted in 14K yellow gold: the letters IHS interlace with a cross at their heart, finished with fleur-like tips in the spirit of medieval manuscripts. An emblem early Christians wore as a crest of belief, it hangs on an 18-inch 14K gold chain and arrives with a story card and artist bio card. From the Lucina K Premier 14K Gold Crosses collection.

Long before the printing press, scribes copying the Scriptures by candlelight would reach the end of a line with no room left for the holy Name. Rather than divide it, they shortened it, taking the first letters of Jesus in Greek and setting a small line above them. IHS became a quiet signature of faith, carved into church doors, stitched into altar cloths and painted into the margins of illuminated manuscripts.

The IHS Christogram gathers that history into a single sculpted pendant of 14K yellow gold. The three letters weave together around a central cross, their curling serifs and pointed tips recalling Gothic lettering and the ornament of cathedral windows. Over the centuries the monogram has been read as “Jesus, Savior of Men” and “In His Service,” so it carries both a name and a calling.

A thoughtful gift for a confirmation, baptism, first communion, ordination or Easter, this Christogram cross necklace is a lasting keepsake for her, for a mother or grandmother, or for anyone who wants to wear a symbol the faithful have shared for nearly two thousand years.

Size: approx. 1.12 in tall and 1.12 in wide, not including the jump ring. Comes on an 18-inch 14K yellow gold chain.

The story card reads:
Christogram
Monogram of Christ and Crest of Christians
A Christogram is an ancient symbol that uses a combination of letters to form an abbreviation or Monogram of Jesus Christ. These symbols are found in ancient artwork, architecture and furniture. Ancient Christians used these Christograms as a Crest or symbol for believers.
IHS – In Greek, Jesus is spelled IHSOUS. When scribes copied the Scriptures they sometimes didn’t have room to spell out His full name at the end of a line and didn’t want to divide the Divine Name of Jesus. So, they abbreviated using the 1st, 2nd and 6th letters of His name in Greek and added a contraction line over IHS and readers understood that IHS stood for Jesus. IHS has been interpreted as “Jesus, Savior of Men” and later interpreted as “In His Service.”
