IHS interpreted as meaning Iesus Hominum Salvator (Jesus Savior of Men) in Latin or connected with In Hoc Signo used in latin since the 7th century. English language interpretation of IHS have included “I have Suffered” and “In His Service”.

IHS – In Greek, Jesus is spelled IHSOUS. When scribes copied the Scriptures they sometimes didn’t have room to spell out His full name at the end of a line and didn’t want to divide the Divine Name of Jesus. So, they abbreviated using the 1st, 2nd and 6th letters of his name in Greek and added a contraction line over IHS and readers understood that IHS stood for Jesus. IHS has been interpreted as “Jesus Savior of Men” and later interpreted as In “His Service”
